Excision of Endometriosis

What is Excision of Endometriosis?

The da Vinci Robotic Surgical Team at The Endometriosis Treatment Center of America is specially trained in robotic excision of endometriosis. This state-of-the-art technology allows our team to perform minimally invasive surgery for OB/GYN patients with greater precision and control.

Excision (or resection) is when the lesions of endometriosis are completely removed, not leaving any damaged tissue behind. Excision helps maintain healthy tissue in the surrounding organs.

Once the damaged tissue is removed, the specimens are sent to pathology to rule out cancer and determine the extent of the disease.

Endometriosis commonly affects the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, which can seriously compromise fertility function for women. Since 50% of patients with endometriosis experience infertility, we have made it part of our mission to perform excision of endometriosis when patients still desire pregnancy to ensure that the pelvic structure is optimal to achieve pregnancy.

“We believe extensive excision of Endometriosis is the best option because it decreases the amount and time for any disease recurrence and eliminates a significant amount of pelvic pain that our patients experience.” – Dr. Jonathan Zaidan

Our approach to excision of endometriosis treatment:

First – Accurate Diagnosis

It is important to make an accurate diagnosis utilizing laparoscopic visualization and biopsy. Laparoscopy is the gold standard in achieving excellent visualization of the pelvic organs. A biopsy is not always needed if good visualization is achieved. Excision treatment and tissue removal for biopsy can begin at the time of diagnosis.

Second – Manage Inflammation

It is important to calm down the inflammatory response of endometriosis. Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease that will progress without treatment. Remember the law…”An object in motion stays in motion until some equal and opposite force acts upon it.” That applies to endometriosis. If you do not blunt or stop the hormones driving the endometriosis growth (estrogen) the inflammation will continue to worsen.

Third – Excision

The lesions of endometriosis should be excised (completely removed) utilizing the robotic platform, da Vinci Robot. Precision and accuracy is crucial in tissue removal surrounding the pelvic organs, vasculature, pelvic nerves, bowel, bladder and ureters to avoid further complications.

Fourth - Maintenance

At the Endometriosis Treatment Center of America, we believe in maintenance therapy after excision surgery to alter the estrogen progesterone balance so you are less likely for disease recurrence.
